The elephant was sitting on the hill, looking at the clouds. They looked like fat, white elephants. He was very happy. Then he saw a flower near him. She was walking round him, stopping every now and then, and looking at him.
"What's wrong?" asked the elephant. "Funny!" said the flower. "You're a funny animal!" "I'm a funny animal!" cried the elephant. "Yes, you're funny," said the flower. "You haven't got any petals." "No, you are funny," said the elephant. "You haven't got a trunk."
"Nonsense," said the flower. "I've seen lots of things with petals and leaves. But I've never seen anything with a trunk!"

When the flower came to the pond, it was full of petals and leaves, but there was no bump. In the water was the elephant. The elephant's trunk looked so beautiful. The flower was very happy.
"I don't want petals," said the elephant.
"You were right!" said the flower.
"You don't need petals. Elephants have trunks and flowers have petals."
And then she said, "Elephants are elephants and flowers are flowers." That made the elephant happy.
